The Buzz:
The Aokigahara forest is an unsettling environment worthy of a
psychological horror movie, and I'm looking forward to watching Natalie
Dormer navigate a terrain worlds away from Westeros. Here's hoping the
screenplay will have some humanity, too. - Arno Kazarian
The Buzz:
More than worthy of its place on countless top 10 lists this year is
Alejandro González Iñárritu's brutal and naturalistic follow-up to Birdman,
which you might wind up watching with your hands mostly covering your
eyes after the Leo vs. bear scene that everyone is talking about. The
film is convincing in so many ways; namely, reinforcing our opinion that
Tom Hardy should mainly play bad guys. After two solid weeks in
ultra-limited release, The Revenant expands nationwide this week as the Oscar campaign kicks into second gear
The Buzz:
Charlie Kaufman's critically-approved stop-motion animated feature has
an above-average start in a mere four theaters this past weekend, but
you get the sense that box-office hawks expected it to fare much better
given all the advanced hype. Let's see how this story -- which,
admittedly, seems like a tough mainstream sell -- fares as it expands
this weekend.
The Buzz:
Though it's very early in the new year, we feel like The Masked Saint
will go down as one of the most questionable wide releases of the year.
Without knocking the movie's faith-based element, the story of a
wrestler-turned-pastor-slash-crime-fighter, which is being presented as a
straight drama, makes us scratch our head and wonder who thought this
was a truly marketable idea.
The Buzz:
The reportedly violent movie that brings together mega-stars Amitabh
Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar also features John Abraham in a role that has
been kept secret.
The Buzz:
More than one review praised Tim Blake Nelson's directing and knack for
dialogue with his latest turn behind the camera, but there was an equal
amount of criticism of the overused storytelling technique of bringing
the lives of many disparate characters together through a single event.
The Buzz:
If you happened to catch the excellent movie Police, Adjective
by Corneliu Porumboiu, one of the Romanian New Wave filmmakers, then
you might be excited by the fact that Porumboiu's usual techniques are
in place here -- long camera shots and all -- though his sense of humor
moves into a more overt yet unpredictable territory with this
adventure-comedy.
The Buzz:
James Franco collaborates again with The Color of Time director Gabrielle Demeestere on this quiet and naturalistic adaptation of his novel A California Childhood.
